ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the second time this season, five different Johnnies rushed for a touchdown as No. 6 Saint John's defeated Hamline 41-7 on a blustery Saturday, Oct. 10, in St. Paul.

SJU (6-0, 4-0 MIAC) set the tone early in the first quarter. After forcing a three-and-out to start the game, junior running back Jakob Reding (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took the Johnnies' first snap from scrimmage 45 yards for a touchdown just 1:49 into the contest.

Following another three-and-out, SJU marched 47 yards on 11 plays, ending on a one-yard plunge by freshman running back Stephen Johnson (Mahtomedi, Minn.).

Senior defensive lineman David Burns (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) forced and recovered a fumble on the Pipers' next offensive play to give SJU the ball on the Hamline 37. Junior quarterback Joe Boyle (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) connected with sophomore wide receiver Andrew Rotschafer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) on the very next play, a 37-yard one-handed catch, to give the Johnnies a 21-0 lead with 6:01 remaining in the first frame. The catch was Rotschafer's first career touchdown.

The Pipers (2-3, 1-3 MIAC) scored their only touchdown of the game on a 20-yard blocked punt return by Justin Bain 1:54 into the second quarter.

The Johnnies answered with a 48-yard scoring drive on eight running plays, ending on a three-yard run by senior running back Kellen Blaser (Austin, Minn./Pacelli). The extra point failed, making the score 27-7.

Senior linebacker Dustin Franta (Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area) blocked a Hamline punt late in the second quarter, giving SJU the ball on the Pipers' 43. Eight plays later, Boyle scored on a quarterback sneak as time expired to give the Johnnies a 34-7 lead at the half.

Sophomore Jimmy Loonan (Waseca, Minn.) ended the scoring with a one-yard run at the 7:16 mark of the fourth quarter.

Boyle finished the afternoon 8 of 16 passing for 85 yards. Reding led the Johnnies with 78 yards on just eight carries, while Blaser added 76 yards on 13 attempts. Rotschafer finished with three catches for 58 yards. Sophomore linebacker Evan Cobb (Becker, Minn.) led the SJU defense with nine tackles, all solo, including two tackles for loss, a quarterback sack and an interception. Senior defensive lineman Kyle Schroeder (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) collected four tackles, all for a loss, to increase his team-leading total to 11 on the season.

The Johnnies finished with 16 tackles for loss and eight sacks in the game.
