Johnnies Fall to No. 5 Wis.-Stout, 5-3

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's University outshot No. 5 Wis.-Stout 41-31 but fell to the Blue Devils 5-3 on Thursday, Jan. 8 in St. Cloud.

Despite a 16-8 shot advantage for SJU in the first period, Derek Hanson scored his 11th goal of the season with a 4-on-3 advantage to give Stout a 1-0 lead at the 13:07 mark of the opening frame.

Joel Whited increased the Blue Devils' lead to 2-0 just over three minutes into the second period. Ten minutes later, David Larson scored his first goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 3-0 in favor of Wis.-Stout.

SJU, which outscored Wis.-Stout 3-2 in the final period, cut the deficit to 3-1 thanks to a power-play goal from sophomore Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) 5:15 into the third. Senior Jason Johannes (Eagan, Minn.) and sophomore Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for the Johnnies (3-10-1, 0-5-1 MIAC).

The Blue Devils answered, however, 25 seconds later with Hanson's second goal of the game to make it 4-1 in favor of Stout.

Freshman Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) tallied his first of two power-play goals on the night at the 8:46  mark of the third period. Ellena blasted a slapshot off the blocker of Wis.-Stout goaltender Matt Koenig, which then ricocheted off the back of a Blue Devil defenseman into the back of the net.

Scott Motz increased Stout's (10-4-0, 4-2-0 NCHA) lead to 5-2 with a power-play goal of his 2:20 later.

Ellena ended the scoring with another power-play goal, his fifth tally of the season, with 1:02 left in regulation. Seniors Clayton Rehm (Park Rapids, Minn.) and Brian Baker (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) were credited with assists.

Junior Stu Van Ess (Kewaskum, Wis.) made 26 saves in his first career  start for SJU, while Koenig made 38 saves for the Blue Devils. The Johnnies were 3-for-11 on the man advantage as both teams combined for 23 penalties (46 penalty minutes) in the contest.

The Johnnies travel to face Wis.-River Falls for a 7:05 p.m. opening faceoff on Friday, Jan. 9.
