Second-Half Drought Ends Johnnies' Streak

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – St. Olaf defeated Saint John's 71-59 to snap the Johnnies' six-game winning streak Monday, Jan. 5 in Collegeville. The win was just the fifth victory (5-36 record) against Jim Smith's Johnnies in Collegeville during his 45-season tenure at SJU.

Sophomore wing Todd Herman (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) led the Johnnies with 18 points, while sophomore wing Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Freshman wing Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds. Freshman point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) posted 11 points and six assists for SJU (6-4, 4-1 MIAC).

Freshman Bobby Fong led St. Olaf (5-5, 2-3 MIAC), which shot just 37.5 percent (12-32) in the first half, with 18 points. The Oles shot 54.2 percent (13-24) in the second half, including four of seven from three-point range. St. Olaf also scored 18 points off the Johnnies' 14 turnovers in the contest.

SJU surrendered a one-point lead with 11 minutes remaining by missing 12 of its final 15 shots in the game for a total of eight points. The Johnnies entered the game with a .407 three-point percentage, but were just five of 17 from behind the arc (.294) this evening.

The Johnnies return to action Wednesday, Jan. 7 as they travel to face Augsburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
