Johnnies Get Back On Track With 81-54 Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Five Johnnies scored in double-figures as Saint John's cruised to an 81-54 win over Hamline Saturday, Jan. 17 in Collegeville.

Sophomore wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) led all scorers with 13 points, while freshman wing Andrew Latzke (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added 11. Freshman wing Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), sophomore wing Sam Blank (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) and freshman point guard Larry Walker (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) added 10 points apiece.

Barmore and sophomore wing Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) each grabbed seven rebounds, and freshman point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) tallied a career-high nine assists on the afternoon.

Sophomore center Carl Hipp led the Pipers (3-10, 2-7 MIAC), which shot 24.3 percent in the first half, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Both teams combined for 42 turnovers on the day. The Johnnies (7-7, 5-4 MIAC) scored 37 of their 81 points off of the Pipers' 22 turnovers in the contest.

With the victory, SJU head coach Jim Smith is now eight wins away from 700 for his career with a 692-482 record in 45 seasons. The Johnnies are now 70-22 all-time against Hamline under the direction of Smith, including a 38-9 record in Collegeville.

SJU returns to action Monday, Jan. 19 as it travels to face Gustavus Adolphus. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in St. Peter.
