ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's opened the second half of the MIAC schedule with a 3-2 win over Augsburg Friday, Jan. 16 in St. Cloud.
Senior forward Brian Baker (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with his eighth goal of the season 9:17 into the contest with assists going to fellow senior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.) and sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.).
Augsburg tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Mario Mjelleli just 1:18 into the second frame.
Junior forward Chris Murray (Chanhassen, Minn.) gave the lead back to the Johnnies with his third tally of the season at the 10:44 mark of the second period. Freshman forward Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) and senior defenseman Clayton Rehm (Park Rapids, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for the Johnnies (4-11-1, 1-5-1 MIAC).
Junior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) extended the Johnnies' lead to 3-1 with his third tally of the season 1:16 into the third period. Murray tallied his second point of the game with the goal's lone assist.
The Auggies' Joel Sauer cut the lead to 3-2 at the 13:05 mark of the final frame to end the scoring.
Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 26 saves to improve his record to 4-6-1 on the season. Andy Kent made 36 saves for the Auggies (3-11-0, 2-3-0 MIAC).
SJU, which entered the game with the MIAC's top power-play unit, was 0-for-7 with the man advantage. Augsburg was 0-for-6.
SJU travels to face the Auggies for a 7 p.m. faceoff Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Augsburg Ice Arena in Minneapolis.
