Johnnies Open 2008 Season With 2-0 Win

Sollom and Martinez Tally First Career Goals, Nelson Records First Career Win and Shutout

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint John's University soccer team began its season with a 2-0 win over Wartburg College, Iowa, Friday, Aug. 29.

A.J. Sollom (Roberts, Wis. /River Falls) and Nelson Martinez (Bloomington, Minn. /Kennedy), both sophomores, recorded their first career goals for the Johnnies in the match. Sophomore Tom Hoffman (Mahtomedi, Minn. ) and senior Brian Horst (Stillwater, Minn. ) assisted on Sollom's first-half goal, while sophomore Clash Lo (St. Paul, Minn. /Tartan) recorded the lone assist on Martinez's goal in the 66th minute. 

Junior goalkeeper Luke Nelson (Caledonia, Minn. /Caledonia) recorded 10 saves and earned the shutout in his first career start for the Johnnies. Trent Michael made seven saves for the Knights (0-1, 0-0 IIAC).

SJU (1-0, 0-0 MIAC) hosts the University of Mary, N.D. Saturday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. in Collegeville.
