MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Saint John's and St. Thomas skated to a 2-2 tie Saturday, Dec. 6 at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
Following a scoreless first period, UST (4-4-2, 3-0-1 MIAC) took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Adam Davis 4:47 into the second period.
Senior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.) tied the game for SJU with less than five minutes left in the second frame (15:08), his sixth goal of the season, with a power-play tally. Senior forwards Jason Johannes (Eagan, Minn.) and Brian Baker (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for the Johnnies.
Freshman forward Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) gave the visiting Johnnies (1-8-1, 0-5-1 MIAC) a 2-1 lead 2:08 into the third period with an assist going to freshman defenseman Nick Roscoe (Eau Claire, Wis.), his first career point.
The Tommies tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play goal from Rob Johnson at the 11:33 mark of the third period.
Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 31 saves for SJU, which was 1-for-5 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill (12 of 13 in the series).
The Johnnies return to action next weekend as they play host to Concordia-Moorhead for a non-conference series beginning on Saturday, Dec. 13. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
