ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's University senior forward Brian Baker sixth goal of the season proved to be the game winner as the Johnnies defeated Concordia-Moorhead 3-2 in non-conference action Sunday, Dec. 14 in St. Cloud.
Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a deflection goal from Cory Johnson 8:45 into the contest.
Senior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.) tied the game at 1-1 with his eighth goal of the season 2:42 later. Senior defenseman Clayton Rehm (Park Rapids, Minn.) and sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (3-8-1, 0-5-1 MIAC).
Freshman forward Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) gave SJU a 2-1 lead by knocking in his own rebound at the 14:18 mark of the second period. Senior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) was credited with an assist on the play.
The Cobbers tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from Marc Harrie 8:36 into the final period.
Baker (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) then blasted a loose puck in front of the net for the game-winning goal. Connelly and senior forward Jason Johannes (Eagan, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play.
Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 26 stops to improve his record to 3-4-1 on the season. Concordia's Mike Persson made 28 saves in relief of Elliot Okland, who left the game due to injury less than five minutes into the game.
Both teams combined for a 0-for-15 performance on the power play (CC: 0 of 8; SJU: 0 of 7). SJU, which outshot the Cobbers 35-28 in the contest, has now won 17 of the last 19 meetings with Concordia.
The Johnnies return to action in the New Year as they play host to nationally-ranked Adrian, Mich. on Sunday, Jan. 4. The puck is scheduled to drop at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
