Johnnies Rout Concordia, 8-3

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Thirteen different Johnnies recorded a point as Saint John's defeated Concordia-Moorhead 8-3 in a non-conference game Saturday, Dec. 13 in St. Cloud.

Sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) tallied two goals and an assist, while senior forward Brian Baker (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added three assists to lead the Johnnies (2-8-1, 0-5-1 MIAC).

SJU jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead with goals from senior forward Jason Johannes (Eagan, Minn.), Wallgren and junior forward Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.).

Concordia's Alec Holen cut the deficit to 3-1 for the Cobbers (1-9-2, 0-4-2 MIAC) at the 16:01 mark of the first frame.

The Johnnies increased their lead to 5-1 with two second-period goals from senior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.) and sophomore defenseman Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.). Wallgren then added his second goal of the game, this time on the power play, 7:11 into the third period.

The Cobbers cut the SJU lead to 6-3 with goals from Marc Harrie and Mark McNaughton, 1:01 apart.

SJU ended the scoring with goals from junior forward Chris Murray (Chanhassen, Minn.) and senior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) late in the third.

Senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 19 saves to improve his record to 2-4-1 on the season.

SJU outshot Concordia 39-22 in the game, as both teams were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

The Johnnies host the Cobbers for another non-conference tilt Sunday, Dec. 14. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
