Jerry Haugen

The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 46th season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2021. The Johnnies have posted a 392-94-5 (.803) overall record and a 297-59-4 (.831) MIAC record in the 45 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.4 points per game (491 games) and recorded 66 shutouts (13.4 percent) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 23 times, including 13 of the past 18 seasons, and in scoring defense 28 times, including 20 of the past 24 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15 (first place without postseason games). Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts an 888-671-5 (.569) career record, which places him in the top 15 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The 2022 season will be the 45th for Haugen, who has led SJU to four MIAC playoff titles, two regular-season championships and 11 consecutive appearances in the MIAC Tournament (13 overall). In addition to baseball and football, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach at SJU. He has four children and eight grandchildren, and lives with his wife, Cindy, in St. Cloud. - jthaugen@csbsju.edu
