The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 41st season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2016. The Johnnies have posted a 349-87-5 (.797) overall record and a 275-57-4 (.824) MIAC record in the 40 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.5 points per game (441 games) and recorded 55 shutouts (12.5%) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 19 times, including nine of the past 14 seasons, and in scoring defense 24 times, including 16 of the past 20 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He is tied for third on the school’s career interception list with 15. Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts a 762-623-5 (.550) career record, which places him in the top 25 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. The Johnnies have made eight MIAC Tournament appearances with two regular-season conference titles and three MIAC Playoff championships, including 2015 and 2016, during his tenure.
