Jerry Haugen

The 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year (American Football Monthly), Haugen is in his 39th season as an assistant football coach at Saint John’s in 2014. The Johnnies have posted a 329-83-5 (.795) overall record and a 261-55-4 (.822) MIAC record in the 38 seasons with Haugen as a defensive coach. SJU has allowed 14.6 points per game (417 games) and recorded 53 shutouts (12.7%) during his tenure. Since 1978, his defense has finished in the top two of the MIAC in total defense 18 times, including eight of the past 12 seasons, and in scoring defense 22 times, including 14 of the past 18 seasons. A 1976 graduate of Saint John’s, Haugen was a four-year starter and gained All-MIAC honors as a defensive back in 1975. He ranks second on the school’s career interception list with 15. Haugen also serves as SJU’s head baseball coach, where he boasts a 704-593-5 (.543) career record, which places him in the top 25 on the NCAA Division III winningest active coaches win list. He earned his 700th career win at Macalester on April 22, 2014. The Johnnies have made six MIAC Tournament appearances with two regular-season conference titles and a MIAC Playoff championship (2012) during his tenure. In addition to baseball and football, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach at SJU.
