Johnnies Travel to Illinois to Race Among Nationally Ranked Field

Saint John's returns to competition at Augustana's Interregional Invitational at 11 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 18, at Saukie G.C. in Rock Island, Ill. – Live Results

SATURDAY'S RACES: The men's Gold Division race is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday with a limit of 10 runners per team. The Blue Division race is set for 12:30 p.m. and the rest of the SJU team will compete in the Open Race at 2 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's finished 14th out of 34 teams at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational back on Oct. 3 at Whitetail G.C. in Colfax, Wis. Then-No. 24 Wisconsin-Platteville had three runners in the top 15 and won the race with 104 points, just ahead of then-No. 17 Wisconsin-Stevens Point in second (111). Then-No. 12 Hope (Mich.) was third, followed by then-No. 1 Wisconsin-La Crosse (137) and then-No. 11 St. Olaf (143). The Johnnies totaled 443 points for 14th.

Junior Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) led the Johnnies in 19th, 17th among NCAA Division III competitors, out of 322 runners with an 8k time of 25:32.

Senior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was next in 80th (26:33), followed by seniors Jacob Malecha (Lonsdale, Minn./New Prague) in 150th and Aiden Chalmers (Chaska, Minn./Minnetonka) in 159th (27:45). Junior Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) eased into his season debut in 163rd (27:48) to round out the Johnnies' five.

Open 8k
Freshman Mason Anderson (Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley) and sophomore Adam Marable (Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) led the rest of the Johnnies in 105th (29:37) and 106th (29:38) in the Open 8k.

WHO WILL BE THERE: The Johnnies are scheduled to be joined in the Gold race by a deep field that includes 14 top-30 programs: Calvin (Mich.), Carleton, Carthage (Wis.), No. 13 Chicago (Ill.), No. 29 Colorado College, Cornell (Iowa), Dubuque (Iowa), Grinnell (Iowa), No. 17 Hope (Mich.), Kalamazoo (Mich.), Lawrence (Wis.), No. 25 Loras (Iowa), Macalester, Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.), Mount Union (Ohio), Nebraska Wesleyan, No. 6 North Central (Ill.), No. 30 Otterbein (Ohio), No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.), No. 11 Rensselaer (N.Y.), Rose-Hulman (Ind.), Trine (Ind.), Trinity (Texas), No 24 UC-Santa Cruz, No. 2 Wartburg (Iowa), No. 20 Washington (Mo.), Wheaton (Ill.), Wisconsin-Eau Claire, No. 1 Wisconsin-La Crosse, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, No. 14 Wisconsin-Platteville, Wisconsin-River Falls, No. 15 Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Wisconsin-Stout and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

LAST YEAR'S RACE: SJU finished 17th out of 40 teams at last year's Augustana's Interregional Invitational held Oct. 19 (2024) at Saukie G.C. Then-No. 2 Wartburg (Iowa) won the race with 41 points, followed by then-No. 5 North Central (Ill.) in second (144), then-No. 4 Wisconsin-Whitewater (160), then-No. 27 Wisconsin-Eau Claire (166) and then-No. 18 Washington (Mo.) in fifth (182). The Johnnies placed 17th with 525 points.

Kaluza led SJU in 55th place out of 436 runners with an 8k time of 25:23. Cavanaugh was next in 103rd (25:48), followed by Chalmers in 136th (26:09) and Stencel in 147th (26:13). Senior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) rounded out the Johnnies' five in 172nd (26:27).

Ethan Leonard '25 led the rest of SJU's contingent in the Blue Division race with an 111th-place finish out of 407 runners with a time of 27:35.
