Cavanaugh Leads SJU to Second-Place Finish

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's cross country opened its 2024 season with a second-place finish out of six teams at its Toni St. Pierre Invitational on Friday, Sept. 6, at Boulder Ridge G.C.

Wisconsin-Stout, which is ranked fourth in the North Region and No. 25 nationally, took first place with 24 points, followed by SJU (40), Bethel (85), Wisconsin-Superior (96), Augsburg (163) and Northwestern (173). 

The Blue Devils' Matthew Thomas won the 5k race in 15:29.4, a second ahead of teammate Casey Deboth.

Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) led the Johnnies in third place out of 99 runners with a time of 15:34.5. The senior competed in only one race last fall due to injury.

Sophomore Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was two seconds behind Cavanaugh in fourth (15:36.) and classmate Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) was ninth (15:40.1).

Junior Nick St. Peter (Maple Grove, Minn.) 11th (15:43.3) and senior Dylan Bartness (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) was the Johnnies' fifth score in 15th (15:48.6).

SJU returns to competition in two weeks at the St. Olaf Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in Northfield.
