SJU Finishes Augustana Qualifier, Lelwica Takes Second at St. Olaf Decathlon

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Saint John's track and field closed the regular-season schedule by completing the two-day Augustana Midwest Twilight Qualifier on Thursday, May 16.

Junior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), who was fresh off his MIAC title and school-record height of 2.10 meters in the high jump, finished fourth with a mark of 2.03 meters. He entered the day safely in a tie for third in NCAA Division III.

The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay (Kieran Murnan, Kevin Arthur, Aidan Morey, Matt Hansen) was seventh (41.17), 0.23 behind its season-best time of 40.94 that enabled the foursome to finish second last weekend at the MIAC Championships.

Senior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) ended his SJU career with an eighth-place finish and season-best mark of 13.90 meters in the triple jump.

Junior Ethan Leonard (Chaska, Minn.) finished 14th (16:18.51) the first section of the 5,000 meters and freshman Vincent Kaluza (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) claimed 17th in the event's second section in 15:30.41, 27 seconds behind his season-best time of 15:03.83. Freshman Cooper Smith (Alvarado, Minn./East Grand Forks) finished 14th in the 400-meter hurdles (54.65).

Junior Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) placed 18th with a season-best time of 4:02.40 in the 1,500 meters and senior Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) was 19th in the 800 meters (1:58.29).

St. Olaf's Last-Chance Decathlon
Junior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) finished second at St. Olaf's Last-Chance Decathlon earlier today in Northfield.

Lelwica tallied three more personal bests (seven total for the two-day event), including a new PR of 6,526 points. The total surpassed his second-place score of 6,432 points recorded in at the MIAC Decathlon earlier this month and is good for 12th in NCAA Division III this spring.

The top 22 declared student-athletes in each individual event and the top 16 declared relay teams will participate at the 2024 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships May 23-25 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The qualifiers are scheduled to be announced before 8 p.m. ET tomorrow (Friday, May 17) on www.ncaa.com.
