COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior tight end Alex Larson (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) was named to the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) All-America first team for the second-straight season on Monday, Dec. 11.

SJU has now had 112 football student-athletes earn All-America honors a total of 148 times in the program's 112-season history. Larson is the seventh Johnnie to earn All-America honors three times, joining offensive guard Chuck Froehle '57, offensive tackle Fred Cremer '67, wide receiver Blake Elliott '03, linebacker Cam McCambridge '03, defensive lineman Jeremy Hood '04 and offensive guard Dan Greenheck '20.  

A three-time All-MIAC honoree, Larson led SJU with 68 receptions, was second with 764 receiving yards and tied for third with eight receiving touchdowns in 10 games this fall. The 6-foot-7 target became SJU's all-time leader in catches (171), receiving yards (2,097) and receiving touchdowns (30) by a tight end. 

Larson recorded seven 100-yard receiving games (with three others between 96-98 yards) and ended his career fourth in SJU history, regardless of position, in receptions and seventh in receiving touchdowns.

Larson was a consensus first-team All-American (AFCA, Associated Press, D3football.com) last fall and was named to the D3football.com All-America fourth team in 2021. He earned his third-consecutive D3football.com All-Region 6 first-team distinction Dec. 6. The 2023 D3football.com All-Americans are scheduled to be announced prior to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl this Friday, Dec. 15. 

SJU (8-2, 7-1 MIAC) ended the 2023 regular season ranked as high as No. 16 in the D3football.com Top 25 poll.

The AFCA's Division III All-America Selection Committee is made up of head coaches representing each conference from each of the AFCA's seven districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.
