COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's junior Maguire Petersen won the SJU Decathlon on Sunday, April 10, in Clemens Stadium.

Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the two-day, 15-man event with a total of 6,402 points. The score is good for third-best in NCAA Division III so far this outdoor season and fifth in program history. 

Over half of the decathlon's participants were non-Division III: five from Division I St. Thomas, one from Division II Minnesota-Duluth and two from NAIA Clarke (Iowa).

He entered the final day in first place with 3,577 points, 175 points ahead of UST's Nate Raddatz and stood at the starting line of the final event Sunday, the 1,500-meter run, with a 144-point lead. Petersen claimed third with a time of 5:12.85, to Raddatz's third-place finish, to win the decathlon by a 59-point margin.

Petersen started the day with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.07) and took second in the discus (32.45 meters). He tied for fourth in the pole vault (3.85 meters) and claimed second (45.52), behind sophomore Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) in first (46.71 meters), in the javelin. Hennen finished 14th overall (4,174 points).

Freshmen Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) and Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) finished seventh (5,157 points) and 12th (4,746 points), respectively. Lelwica placed third in the discus (32.40 meters) and Thurk's top finish Sunday was sixth in the javelin (39.25 meters).

The Johnnies are scheduled to compete at Gustavus Adolphus' Lee Krough Invitational on Thursday, April 14, in St. Peter and Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday, April 15, in Azusa, Calif.
