A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (8-6-3, 6-2-2 MIAC) clinched an MIAC-Playoff berth with a convincing 5-0 win at Concordia-Moorhead Nov. 2 in Moorhead. Senior Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead 29:35 into the match. Junior David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) sent a cross pass to Carson, who sent the one-timer shot to the back of the net for his second goal of the year. Sophomore Alex Niederloh was also credited with an assist. Wee added to the lead with his sixth goal of the season 8:07 into the second half, with an assists to Niederloh and freshman Nick Van Marter (Portland, Ore./Cleveland), and added another 3:02 later from senior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and Van Marter. Wee was named the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week for his performance.

Senior Elliott Olsen (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) made it 4-0 with his first goal of the season, and first since his freshman year, at the 68:25 mark of the match. Junior Nicholas DeVetter (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) earned the assist. Sophomore Robert Deetz (Owatonna, Minn.) ended the scoring with a breakaway goal, his second of the season, with 6:10 remaining on a pass from freshman Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory). Senior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made five saves in the first 70:10 of the match before being relieved by sophomore Alec Almquist (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), who made two saves in the final 19:50 to share the shutout.

76%: Under the direction of head coach John Haws, the Johnnies are 17-4-4 (.760) in regular-season MIAC matches after September, including a 9-0-4 record the past two seasons.

T-3RD: With his assist in Saturday's 5-0 win at Concordia, Coborn is now tied with Jim Phelps (1979-81) for third in school history with 87 career points (26g/35a). SJU's all-time leader in assists, Coborn is fifth in goals and needs six points to join John Boyd (1985-88) in second place on the all-time points list.

A LOOK AT THE GUSTIES: Nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (13-2-1, 10-0-0 MIAC) wrapped up a perfect MIAC season with a 2-0 home win over Hamline Nov. 2. Fifteen of Gustavus' 20 goals scored over its current eight-match winning-streak came in the second half. Junior Zach Brown leads the team in goals (10) and points (24), while classmates David Lilly and Mark Tollefsrud follow with 13 (3g/7a) and 12 points (6g/0a), respectively. Brown has five goals in three games against SJU, including the game-winning goal in 2011 (2-1 in double overtime) and 2012 (2-1 in overtime). Junior Brett Ylonen has all 16 decisions (13-2-1 record) in net with a 0.40 GAA and a .898 save percentage (53 saves). Ylonen allowed only two goals in league play and posted a 0.21 GAA and a .944 save percentage against MIAC opponents.

EARLIER THIS SEASON: Gustavus scored four second-half goals, including two in the first 3:27 following intermission, in a 4-0 win over Saint John's on Sept. 28 in Collegeville. Sean Sendelbach tallied what proved to be the game-winner 1:13 after halftime, the first of his two goals on the afternoon for Gustavus. Tollefsrud (48:27) and Zach Brown (54:23) also scored goals for the Gusties, who out-shot SJU 19-14. Shots on goal, however, were even at 10 apiece. Sophomore Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made six saves in the loss.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 14-16-7 against the Gusties since 1979, including an 8-9-2 record in St. Peter. SJU, however, has won only three of its last 14 matches with GAC overall (3-8-3 record) and scored only four goals in the last nine meetings (2-5-2 record).

END THE STREAKS: SJU will attempt to defeat the 2013 MIAC regular-season champions for the first time since 2009 (1-0). The last time the Johnnies defeated Gustavus in St. Peter was in 2006 (1-0). SJU will also aim to end its two-game losing skid in the MIAC Playoffs. The Johnnies have not won an MIAC-Playoff match since the 1-0 overtime win at Macalester to claim the 2005 title and earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
