Jerry Haugen, a 1976 graduate of Saint John's, ended his 31st season as the Johnnies' baseball head coach in 2008. Haugen's (Hoh-gen) career record of 584-499-5 (.539) places him in the top 25 on the NCAA Div. III winningest active coaches win list. On March 31, 2004, Haugen earned his 500th career victory with an 8-7
victory over Wis.-Superior, which made him the 20th active Division III coach with 500 career wins. The Johnnies have had 15 winning seasons in the last 19 years.
The 1994 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Coach of the Year, Haugen guided the Johnnies to a conference championship season in 1994 and 1998 and advanced for only the second time in school history to the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Tournament in 1998.
Since 1978, Haugen has coached over 64 All-MIAC performers and in 1993, he saw team MVP Jon Dold become the first SJU player in over 30 years to be drafted at the professional level. He currently ranks as the "dean" of MIAC coaches with 30 seasons of conference play under his belt.
A standout football and baseball player during his college years at SJU, Haugen also serves as defensive coordinator for the 2003 NCAA champion Johnnie football team. Haugen was named 2003 NCAA Division III Defensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Monthly.
In addition, Haugen has worked as an assistant basketball coach and head hockey coach during his tenure at SJU. Haugen and his wife, Joanne, live in St. Cloud and have four children.
